If the Russian Empire had its own Sherlock Holmes, it was Ivan Dmitrievich Putilin (1830-1893), the first head of the St. Petersburg detective police. Long before Conan Doyle's first novels and stories were published, the genius of Russian sleuthing practiced the so-called "deductive method". Just like Holmes, Putilin often disguised himself: in the costume of a laborer or a vagrant penetrated into the most dangerous places of the criminal world of the then St. Petersburg. Besides analytical and artistic talents, Ivan Dmitrievich had an extraordinary gift of a storyteller. The book "Forty Years Among Murderers and Robbers" is based on true criminal cases investigated by him, and has survived many reprints. We can safely say that no modern work of literature and cinema created in the genre of "retro detective" has done without reference to the original source - Putilin's book, which immerses readers in the life of the imperial capital.
