Since the end of the Soviet Union, the reprocessing of the socialist legacy has remained at the center of public attention. How does the metaphor of recycling, drawn from ecological and industrial contexts, help describe the changes that have occurred in the post-Soviet space over the past thirty years? What can we say about the specific forms and mechanisms of recycling the recent past? The authors of this book propose moving beyond established approaches to the past—nostalgia theory and trauma theory. They focus on a wide range of topics: literature and visual culture, the late Soviet underground and the video game Atomic Heart, Russian TV series of the 2010s depicting the late USSR, and much more. Without attempting to exhaust all the manifestations of recycling, the researchers use illuminating examples to illustrate how the process of reprocessing the Soviet experience operates in the culture and everyday life that surrounds us.
