The author of this book, renowned Volgograd historian B.G. Usik, director of the Center for the Study of the Battle of Stalingrad, examined a wide range of sources to determine the contribution of the Stalingrad Region People's Militia and workers' battalions to the Great Victory. The work objectively presents the history of the Stalingrad People's Militia Corps, identifying the three stages of its formation and clarifying its command structure and strength. Particular attention is paid to the militia's participation in the military operations to defend their hometown in the summer and fall of 1942. The book identifies the characteristics of the Stalingrad People's Militia in comparison with militias in other regions of the USSR, owing to the socio-economic characteristics of the Stalingrad Region and the city of Stalingrad, as well as the course of military operations on the southern sector of the Soviet-German front. The appendix includes archival documents and photographs from the war period.

This book is intended for scholars, local historians, and anyone interested in the history of the Great Patriotic War and the Battle of Stalingrad.
