Fernando Aramburu's novel "Swifts" was published five years after his celebrated "Homeland," which was translated into 34 languages and brought him worldwide fame. To the surprise of many, this time the writer abruptly changed not only the subject but also the writing style. The hero of "Swifts," a fifty-year-old philosophy professor named Tony, seemingly without apparent reason, decides to commit suicide. He sets a precise date for his own death, giving himself a year to complete his affairs. He then begins keeping a diary, in which he describes the events of the previous day each evening and reconstructs the history of his life. The purpose of the diary is to understand himself and understand why he so irrevocably lost the desire to remain on this earth. The diary is brutally frank, in it Tony unashamedly pours out his deepest feelings, reveals the motives behind his most unsavory actions, and reflects on the nature of happiness, love, friendship, and family relationships.
