In 1345, China came under the heel of brutal Mongol invaders. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in legends. The eighth son of the Zhu family, Zhu Chongba, is foretold a great destiny, while the intelligent and capable second daughter is destined for obscurity.
However, after a gang attack leaves two children orphaned, it is Joo Chonba who falls into despair and dies. To avoid her own death, the girl uses her brother's name and identity. She enters a monastery as a novice and there, driven by a burning desire to survive, discovers that she can do anything to escape the predicted future. After the shrine is destroyed for supporting a rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes one last chance and claims a different destiny - her brother's greatness.
