In 1845, an expedition led by the seasoned polar explorer Sir John Franklin set out on the ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus to the northern coast of Canada in search of a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean—and vanished without a trace. The search dragged on for decades, with information about its fate being pieced together, and the story remains a mystery to this day. However, in the fall of 2014, a sensation broke: after more than a century and a half of searching, the HMS Erebus was finally discovered, and scientists had already begun studying the ship's wreck, perfectly preserved in polar waters. Two years later, in the fall of 2016, the HMS Terror was also found using a remotely operated mini-submarine. But several years before this astonishing discovery, Dan Simmons, the celebrated author of Hyperion and Endymion, Ilion and Olympus, Summer of Night and The Dark Game of Death, offered his own version of events: the expedition's main threat was not the crushing embrace of ice, nor the freezing cold and blizzards, nor spoiled canned food—but an unknown, colossal monster, seemingly woven from snow and polar darkness.

In 2018–2019, a film adaptation of The Terror, produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions, was released. Edward Berger directed, with Simmons himself co-writing the scripts for both seasons. The leading roles were played by Jared Harris, Ciarán Hinds, Tobias Menzies, and Paul Ready. The novel is published with illustrations by Vitaly Ecleris, created especially for this edition.
