This novel by James Pardee (1914-2009) is set in a small town in the mountainous backwoods of West Virginia. The protagonist Sidney De Lakes is released from prison, where he was accused of manslaughter of a friend. Fate gives Sidney a chance to start a new life: he gets a job to care for a young invalid Gareth Wasey, suffering from a strange mental illness. Despite Gareth's complex character Sidney is quite happy, however, as it begins to turn out, all the pivotal events in Sidney's life like threads lead to his nemesis since his school years outcast Roy Sturtevant. Sidney knows they must inevitably come face to face, because their dark mutual enmity is not really what it seems.
