Tiberius Claudius Nero, a representative of one of the most ancient, noble and glorious Roman families, went down in history as the first legitimate ruler of the Roman Empire, who peacefully inherited the supreme power. His predecessors - the destroyer of the Republic Julius Caesar and the founder of the Principate Augustus - gained power after brutal civil wars. Tiberius was an outstanding personality in all respects: a brilliant commander, standing in the same row with the greatest warriors of Rome, a skillful and thrifty ruler: the state flourished under him, the treasury was full, the population did not experience severe tax burdens. During his reign, Christianity was born in the east of the Empire, and the Christian tradition was very favorable to the emperor. At the same time, most Roman historians are extremely harsh on him: Tacitus and Suetonius vilified him as a cruel, merciless tyrant. And modern scholars argue both about the personality of Tiberius and the significance of his reign. In the proposed book, the author tried to give an objective assessment of the life and work of this outstanding and controversial person.
