In the merciless light of a Shetland summer, a forgotten past leads to murder.
In the Shetland Islands, midsummer is the time of the white nights, when birds sing even at midnight and the sun never sets. Artist Bella Sinclair throws a lavish party to celebrate the opening of an exhibition of her work at a beach gallery. However, the party ends abruptly when one of the guests, a mysterious Englishman, collapses, declaring he doesn't know who he is or where he's from.
The next day, the Englishman is found hanging from a beam with a hideous clown mask on his face. His colleagues believe it to be suicide, but Detective Jimmy Perez is convinced the man was murdered. This conviction only grows stronger when another body is discovered at the bottom of a ravine.
