In 1895, Oscar Wilde was at the pinnacle of fame and popularity. A brilliant poet, playwright, and witty conversationalist, everything he did caused either delight or scandal. Became public and his meetings with the young Lord Alfred Douglas. Alfred's father, the powerful Marquis of Queensberry, who suspected that this relationship was more than friendship, began a public prosecution of the writer. Wilde was eventually sentenced to imprisonment. The society that had exalted him turned away and disowned him. While in prison, Oscar Wilde wrote De Profundis, a long and bitter letter of accusation addressed to Douglas, a mournful elegy for his own lost greatness, and a passionate plea for reconciliation. It is an honest and merciless account of feeling, a profound reflection on human suffering, injustice and pain.
