"The Jamaica Inn" is one of the most famous novels by English writer Daphne du Maurier (1907–1989), her first truly great success, followed two years later by the triumph of "Rebecca." Today, the novel is considered a classic of the Gothic tradition in 20th-century literature, and its heroine, Mary Yellan, has been compared to Jane Eyre.

The events of the novel unfold in the early 19th century, against the backdrop of the magical landscapes of Cornwall, its moors and coastal cliffs. True to the genre, the orphaned Mary leaves her homeland and travels to her relatives—her childless aunt and her husband, Joss Merlyn, the gruff and unsociable proprietor of the roadside inn, the Jamaica Inn. The inn has a notorious reputation, and respectable people avoid it, yet it lives its own strange and terrifying life. Mary gradually begins to suspect something, terrible suspicions swirling in her head, but who should she tell? A mistake could cost her dearly...
