Written in 1944 by the art historian Vsevolod Nikolaevich Petrov (1912-1978), a love story about war, or a war tale about love, by the power of two strangely related feelings - the fear of extinction and the rapture of enchantment - combines life (an ambulance train wandering between fronts) and poetry (the "perfect and doomed to death" of the 18th century) into one, as in the poem by Zhukovsky that gave this story its epigraph. Turdey's Manon Lescaut was first published only in 2006, the war diaries in 2017. The present book is the first opportunity to trace the counterpoint of the author's real, extremely intense inner life and the creative imagination that realizes this reality. The edition is complemented by articles by literary critics Igor Gulin and Alexander Zhitenev, written especially for this edition.
