Wehrmacht soldier Wilhelm Lubbecke began his military service in 1939 as a private and graduated as a company commander with the rank of Oberleutnant in 1945. He fought in Poland, France, Belgium, and Russia, where he participated in battles on the Volkhov River, in the Demyansk pocket corridor, near Novgorod and Lake Ladoga. And in 1944, together with his company, he retreated through the Baltics in the direction of East Prussia in exhausting battles. The author recounts in detail the difficult everyday life at the front and the details of the soldiers' lives, reflects on what Germany expected and what it received as a result of this war. Lubbecke's memoirs are a look at the experience of German soldiers on the fronts of World War II from a surviving eyewitness.
