"Lost Illusions" tells the story of a young poet, Lucien de Ruebampre from Angoulême, desperately trying to make a name for himself in Paris as a literary and journalist. He is poor, naive, but very ambitious. Having failed to make a name for himself in his run-down provincial town, he falls under the patronage of a wealthy married woman, Louise de Bargeton, and hopes to make his way into high society. But reputation is more important to Madame de Bargeton, she leaves him, and the people of Beaumont do not want to let him into their circle. And then Lucien realizes that talent is worthless in comparison with money, intrigue and unscrupulousness. Telling us about Lucien's path, Balzac brilliantly depicts a realistic and satirical portrait of provincial and Parisian mores, aristocratic life. This extraordinary novel is about unrealized ambitions, deceived hopes, it is a reflection on time and society, on loss and disappointment.
