The heroine of Lewis Carroll's world-famous fairy tale was rightly perplexed and even slightly indignant: "What's the point of a book if it has no pictures and no conversations?" Let this be the reasoning of a child, but adults are not completely indifferent to pictures and conversations either... There is more than enough conversation in Mikhail Zoshchenko's stories. It seems that the street itself speaks from the pages of his books, the "hundred-mouthed crowd" is chattering. Zoshchenko gives the floor to the average person. Residents of communal apartments and bureaucrats, aspiring poets and inveterate swindlers ("blackamoor" men), handicraftsmen and housewives, frivolous wives of Soviet employees and "widows by birth", workers and peasants, "specialists" and "socialists" chatter, interrupting each other. And as "pictures" the book is decorated with rare autolithographs, made by the recognized master of book graphics Evgeny Kibrik for the anniversary edition of M. Zoshchenko's works "Dear Citizens" (1940). It was this collection that served as the basis for this edition. Its text is supplemented by other stories that have earned the well-deserved fame of the "cheerful writer with sad eyes."
