Viktor Nekrasov's novella "In the Trenches of Stalingrad" became a shining example of so-called "lieutenant's" prose. A front-line soldier and architect by training, with no previous literary experience, Nekrasov managed to convey a personal sense of war. This story is not so much about heroism and victories, although each character can rightfully be called a hero, but rather about inner fear, confusion, a habit of death, and the ability to preserve humanity even where there is no longer any human being left.

Vadim Rostovtsev's engravings, clear and merciless, like the sketches of a field correspondent, reflect the plot's events and convey the author's attitude toward them.
