"In Storms of Steel" is one of the most famous works about the First World War, combining features of fiction, philosophy and memoirs.
The book arose from diary entries that Jünger kept throughout the war. Filled not only with facts conveyed with the author's inherent mathematical precision, but also with impressions that left an indelible mark on his memory, it became his personal history of the war. As Jünger himself wrote: "I do not set myself the goal of painting a picture of heroes, I want to tell not how it could have been, but how it really was."
The book went through 14 reprints, each time the text underwent numerous edits that reflected the author's changing historical and philosophical views over the years, as he reinterpreted the experience of the war in a new way.
