Anna Andreyevna Akhmatova (1889–1966) is a poet whose work is unquestionably considered a treasure trove of Russian literature. “Akhmatova’s poetry is not the same for new people as it is for us. We were perplexed, amazed, delighted, debated, and finally became proud. They don’t need our admiration. They aren’t surprised because they came later,” wrote philologist B. M. Eikhenbaum in 1923.

This edition contains poems from the books “Evening,” “Rosary,” “White Flock,” “Plantain,” “Anno Domini,” and “Reed” published before 1940, as well as poems from this period that were not included in the books. The texts have been verified against autographs preserved in state archives and private collections, as well as from their first publications in periodicals. The author's spelling and punctuation of the originals have been preserved, and the original notation has been adhered to wherever possible. The volume includes a preface and notes prepared by N. I. Kraineva.
