Gaito Gazdanov (1903-1971) was a Russian émigré writer, who was ranked by his contemporaries on a par with V. Nabokov.

The action of the novel "An Evening at Claire's" takes place in Paris in the 1920s. Russian émigré Nikolai meets a charming Frenchwoman Claire, with whom he fell in love back in 1917 in pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg.

Their dates take the hero to the world of his lost homeland: a carefree childhood, studying at a gymnasium and the tragic trials of the Civil War.

The book also includes the novel "The Ghost of Alexander Wolf", which allowed Gazdanov to leave his job as a taxi driver and start earning money through literary work.
