Aby Warburg (1866-1929) was a prominent German art historian who pioneered "iconological" analysis. From a young age, having decided to devote himself to art history, Warburg refused to continue the family banking business and ceded the right of inheritance to his younger brother, taking the latter's promise to buy him any books necessary for his work. During his life, the scientist managed to collect a huge library, which later served as the basis of the famous Warburg Institute in London. "The Great Transmigration of Images" is a collection of five major works by the scientist, created between 1902 and 1929. Already in these early works, not content with the usual notions of the Renaissance as a revival of antiquity and the Reformation as a progressive religious upheaval, Warburg tried to trace the continuous inner connection of the epochs that deny each other: the ever-living "intuitive" memory of image, gesture, name and form. The publication is intended for art historians, cultural historians and all those interested in the history of art.
