An artist inherits a huge stack of photographs of a single giant chestnut tree. A student dies of electrocution, but is resurrected by ghosts of air and light. A scientist makes the discovery that trees are able to communicate with each other. During the Vietnam War, a soldier ejected by an explosion from a downed airplane survives by falling into the branches of a banyan tree. All these people and five other strangers gradually find out that there is another world beside us - huge, slow, interconnected and virtually invisible to humans. This is the story of those who have learned to see this world, and now they are called upon to protect it from imminent disaster, knowing that there is little chance of success.
