The first Russian edition of Louis-Ferdinand Celine's novel "War" is offered to the attention of the domestic reader. The manuscript of this novel was sensationally discovered in the summer of 2021 along with three other manuscripts by Celine, previously considered hopelessly lost. "War" certainly occupies a central place among these discoveries. This novel, which Celine worked on immediately after the publication of "Journey to the End of the Night" (1932), fills a gap that is essential for understanding his work: his stay at the front during the First World War, his serious injury, and a long recovery course in a military hospital. "War" is the only work by Celine where these events are fully and completely reflected. A cruel time of loss of illusions, all shades of human baseness and hypocrisy, the death of comrades in arms, finding new friends in the face of neighbors in the ward, the struggle for survival, pain, horror, hopelessness, loneliness, hatred, sex, love, a series of tragic events constantly turning into farce, evil fate and miraculous salvation through the eyes of the main genius of world literature of the twentieth century. It is difficult to imagine a book more relevant for our time.
