In 1701, a major conflict erupted in Western Europe – the War of the Spanish Succession. Its primary cause was the fate of the Spanish Empire, a vast state whose holdings spanned the globe. But by the early 18th century, Spain was in decline and struggling to defend itself from its greedy neighbors. The last king of the Spanish Habsburg dynasty, Charles II, left no heir. Even during his lifetime, the most powerful states surrounding Spain dreamed of acquiring its lands. The leading contender was France, which sought political hegemony in Europe. It was the French King Louis XIV who succeeded in placing his grandson on the Spanish throne. Fearing the unprecedented growth of French power, the remaining powers – Germany, England, and Holland – declared war on the Kingdom of France, a war that lasted thirteen years and significantly redrew the political map of Europe.
