Anatole France (1844-1924) was a French writer, literary critic and social activist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature (1921) for "brilliant literary achievements marked by refinement of style, deeply felt humanism and a truly Gallic temperament".
"Rise of the Angels" is a fantasy novel published in 1914. The plot centers around the adventures of both ordinary citizens of early twentieth-century Paris and angels who plot a revolution in heaven. The adventures of the angels in Paris during the Third Republic are used by the author for harsh social criticism, directed primarily against the church and militarism. In this novel, the writer anticipates the beginning of the greatest social cataclysms and timed the apocalyptic drama in heaven to a seemingly ordinary earthly year.
