This touching, childlike story about the days of the siege—as seen by little Misha, who remained with his parents in besieged Leningrad—not only reveals the signs of the times and tells the reader "how it was," but also teaches us to be strong: after all, it's not every day you get "a very sweet case of scarlet fever" or try to walk with a crutch because you've suffered a shrapnel wound. And, of course, to be proud of the true heroes: Mishka's mother, who can defuse a landmine herself, or policeman Ivan Fyodorovich Blinchik, who, no matter what, never abandons his post. And Mishka himself and his friends, who decide to put on performances for the wounded soldiers to support them—aren't they heroes?
