1957. In the village of Faha in County Clare, where nothing has changed for a thousand years, changes are coming. For one thing, it has stopped raining. No one remembers when it started: perpetual rain is the norm on the west coast of Ireland. But then the local priest, Father Coffey, announces the arrival of electricity, and the clouds seem to clear. Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is spending the summer in Fach at his grandparents' house, and then, along with the heralds of the future - the electricians - the mysterious Christie appears and brings with him a vast universe of the past and secrets to be revealed, along with lots and lots of live Irish music. Niall Williams has mastered the technique of holographic writing, when the whole cosmos fits into a grain of sand and the same grain of sand is expressed. In each phrase of the novel - a macrocosm of the Irish village, which is the universe, where the electric wires are about to stretch. "Here's Happiness" is an amusing, observational, sometimes funny and invariably touching ommage to the serenity of trying to create anew. It is a novel about growing up - both of individuals and of time itself as such. And, of course, it is a novel about the power and authority of human stories.
