The Battle of Crimea, which lasted intermittently for two and a half years, stands apart in the history of World War II. Both warring sides, or rather their leaders—Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin—attached exceptional importance to the possession of this peninsula. The former fanatically tried to hold on to it, even as the Eastern Front was literally bursting at the seams, its southern flank retreating far to the west; the latter made the liberation of Crimea a top priority. As a result, the liberation of the "all-Union health resort" stretched out for six months and turned into a protracted, grueling battle, drawing in large ground and naval forces from both sides. And in the skies, one of the longest and most brutal air battles unfolded, uninterrupted day, night, or in bad weather. The Crimean epic culminated in a finale of incredible drama and intensity: the Red Army's swift advance toward Sevastopol and the enemy's desperate attempt to withdraw its troops to Romania. This book, based on Russian and German archival documents and other sources, provides the first account of the air battle for Crimea, which lasted from November 1, 1943, to May 12, 1944, and in which many renowned Soviet and German aces participated.
