This edition presents two little-known works by Vladimir Nabokov, the last in his European cycle of works. "The Enchanter" is a novella that anticipates the plot of "Lolita," the precursor and "first pulsation" of the scandalous novel, written in 1939 in Russian in Paris. The fate of "The Enchanter" is controversial: no publisher dared to publish it, and Nabokov himself destroyed all versions of the story except one, which fortunately survived among his papers. It was only in 1986 that the writer's son, Dmitry Nabokov, translated the story into English, and it was then first published. In the plot, an unnamed middle-aged man falls in love with a twelve-year-old girl and marries her ailing widowed mother in order to gain guardianship after her death. However, his plans are thwarted, leading to a tragic ending.

This edition also includes the unfinished novel "Solus Rex," consisting of two chapters: "Ultima Thule" and "Solus Rex." Although never published in its entirety, the novel is an important precursor to Nabokov's English-language works, particularly "Pale Fire." The events of the first chapter unfold in the real world, while the second takes place in a semi-mythical northern kingdom. The characters' stories intersect and intricately reflect each other, and attentive readers will have to discern what lies between truth and fantasy.
