One day, his mother hands twelve-year-old Pella a shoebox full of notes from his deceased father. Each week, the boy must unwrap one of them and do what his father instructed him to do. The contents of the notes range from a link to a video of his father teaching Pelle how to shave, to an errand to take his mom out to a restaurant. In this way, even after his death, his father helps Pelle and his mom start a new life and meet new people. Pelle is very gifted and has an exceptional memory for encyclopedic facts. Since the boy lost his father, this talent determines his survival strategy. Whenever grief threatens to overwhelm him, Pelle thinks of facts that make him not want to cry. The way he manages to hold back gives color to Pelle's character and encourages the reader to feel his emotions without slipping into sentimentality. The story "Notes for Pelle" by the contemporary Dutch writer Marlies Slegers is both a touching and charming portrait of a boy gradually overcoming grief and a story of love between father and son.
