The novel is the diary of an 83-year-old resident of a nursing home. The main entertainment here is television and games, the main competition is who has the most aches and pains, the main intrigue is what's on the dinner menu and who will die first. And the main enemy is the forty-two-year-old director, Mrs. Stellwagen, who has worked at the nursing home for only a year and a half, but has already managed to establish absolute order. Everything is regulated, from the temperature in the rooms, which is very low and not everyone's cup of tea, to the time for bingo, about which everyone has their own opinion. And after several fish die in the aquarium, she, believing sabotage to have occurred, decides to establish total surveillance and install cameras throughout the facility. But the residents of the home, the last representatives of the human race to survive World War II, are not going to give up so easily.
