A Doll's Notes: Fashionable Education in Young Women's Literature of the Late 18th – Early 20th Centuries

This monograph explores the literary representation of fashion dolls in Russian publications from the late 18th to early 20th centuries, focused on women's education. Key topics include sewing and needlework, clothing culture and body image, fashion education, and future motherhood. Gender themes are most fully represented in numerous texts published as doll notes, diaries, and correspondence. These are complemented by a variety of fictional works devoted to doll play. In doll notes, as in all literature for young women, the world of objects plays a significant role: objects and details of attire are given a life-defining and spiritually significant status. The doll's attire, body shape, and facial expression are equally revealing. This study of the world of objects in Russian literature for young women from the late 18th to early 20th centuries is the first attempt in this area.
