In the stories of the collection “Swim” written in the late 1970s – early 1980s, the formation of Fortyin optics is visible. Frozen Soviet life, tired people, accustomed to doublethink, worn concepts come to life from the slightest author's provocation. The “national economy”, the “fly”, the “swim” prove to be a fragile shell of suffering, burlesque and absurdity.
The texts of the collection are very different - in some unusual reflection from the first person ("Vatnik" ), in others - the conciseness of the genre ("Poems and songs" included in the novel "Norma" ); the third - the experience of studying human nature in the vastness of a totalitarian state in the spirit of a mature Sorokin ("Pink tuber", "Dacha", "Padezh" ). The book was first published in 2008, when references to the Soviet metalanguage could be read even with a nostalgic feeling. Today, the theme of the gap between word and meaning is again strikingly relevant.
