Zettel is a collection of notes written by Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) between 1929 and 1948, selected by him personally as the most significant for his philosophy. The collection was probably intended for subsequent publication or use in other works. The notes touch on all the main topics that occupied Wittgenstein throughout these years and until his death. The formulations and possible answers to key questions – what is language, a sentence, the meaning of a word, language games, everyday life, a machine, pain, color, learning to use words, and much more – are given in this collection of notes as clearly as it was possible for Wittgenstein to be, in a multifaceted and not without literary grace. Zettel is an essential source for understanding his philosophy and the potential it contains for philosophical work today.
