"The Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects" is a seminal work in the history of European art and the crowning achievement of the 16th-century Florentine painter, architect, and writer Giorgio Vasari. First published in 1550, this book is an invaluable source of information on Italian art from Cimabue to his celebrated contemporaries—the Late Renaissance masters whom Vasari knew personally.

Vasari's "Lives" are not always impeccable in terms of historical accuracy, but this in no way diminishes their significance, as each biography is not simply a chronicle of a life but also an analysis of the creative path and a subtle stylistic characterization of each artist. After all, Vasari, himself a talented painter and architect, wrote with a profound understanding of the artistic process, which he knew "from the inside."

The first book included parts one and two of Vasari's work, dedicated to the lives and works of the masters of the Early Renaissance: Giotto, Duccio, Donatello, Filippo Brunellesco, Sandro Botticelli, Andrea del Verrocchio, Andrea Mantegna, Filippo Lippi and many others.
