The Kaiser Friedrich III-class battleships (Kaiser-Friedrich-III.-Klasse) embodied the naval might of the German Empire during the intense arms race between the great powers in the lead-up to World War I. These formidable warships reflected the Second Reich's desire to create a powerful navy capable of competing with Great Britain, which dominated the seas. The five battleships, built between 1895 and 1902, were named after German emperors—Wilhelm I, Frederick III, and Wilhelm II—and the celebrated medieval rulers Charlemagne and Frederick I Barbarossa. At the beginning of World War I, the Kaiser-class battleships were redeployed from the North Sea to the Baltic to participate in operations against the Russian fleet. All battleships of this class were scrapped in accordance with the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
