August von Cramon (1861-1940) was appointed Plenipotentiary Representative of Germany to the General Staff of the Austro-Hungarian Army during the First World War. As a link between the headquarters of the two powers, Major General von Cramon took direct part in the development and conduct of military operations, maintained contacts between the allies and the senior leadership of the armies, and was therefore able to depict with documentary accuracy the state of affairs in Austria-Hungary in 1914-1918. The author reliably and impartially describes not only major battles, peace negotiations, the fall of the monarchy in Russia and other significant events of the First World War, but also intrigues in the high command, diplomatic tricks and ambiguous political agreements that determined the course of the war.
