There were many poets among the Decembrists. For some, their work was a noble service to their fellow citizens and the state, a reminder of the lessons of the past and eternal truths. For others, it was a confession, an expression of innermost experiences and thoughts, a solace in the vicissitudes of life. The legacy of the Decembrist poets is rich and varied—it includes not only civic poetry, but also love, landscape, and philosophical lyricism.

This book includes works by Decembrist poets (K. F. Ryleyev, V. K. Kuchelbecker, A. I. Odoevsky, and others), as well as poems by A. S. Pushkin dedicated to the Decembrists. Most of these works have not been reprinted for over sixty years.
