Dissatisfied with his life, Jess Oakroyd, a wealthy middle-aged man, decides to leave his family and set out in search of adventure. Along the way, he joins a motley crew of traveling actors, which also includes a respectable spinster, a frivolous young dancer, a disillusioned teacher, a sharp-tongued comedian, a banjo-playing magician, a charming married couple, and a captivating young singer.

Published in 1929, The Good Friends earned its author fame as an outstanding writer. Audiences were captivated by the fact that, unlike many other writers of the "Lost Generation," Priestley retained his optimism and sincerely believed that many post-war hardships could be overcome. The novel won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, was adapted into a film three times, and remained on bestseller lists for decades.
