Freedom of speech is one of the fundamental values of human civilization. And, Rausch believes, it has recently come under massive and dangerous attack. This isn't just about the obvious, such as the harm of state-imposed censorship or laws that suppress any dissent. It's far more complex, and the threat to freedom of speech comes not only from dictators and totalitarian states, but also from those who, in the struggle for, say, the rights of national minorities or gender equality, impose bans, organize public trials, and, donning the robes of judges and experts, take it upon themselves to decide which words can and cannot be spoken.

Rausch clearly demonstrates that the principle of "you can't hurt people with words" not only threatens civil liberties but also makes the normal development of science impossible.
