Jalal Ale-Ahmad’s (1923–1969) controversial essay has gained worldwide fame and has been translated into many languages. It examines Iran’s internal problems through the prism of the country’s unequal relations with the West. The term “garbzadegi,” literally translated from Farsi as “defeat by the West,” was adopted by Ale-Ahmad from the Iranian thinker Ahmad Fardid and given to it a meaning that has become central: Iran’s technological, cultural, and ideological dependence on the West. The essay has been mistakenly interpreted as an Islamist text, but “garbzadegi” criticizes colonialism, not progress as such. Today, when the confrontation between the ideologies of globalism and anti-globalism remains relevant, and questions of the search for a post-colonial national identity remain sensitive, Ale-Ahmad’s work will be of interest to a wide range of readers.
