Jan de Groot accomplished a colossal task, collecting and classifying the entire host of China's demonic world. To do this, he pored over hundreds of sources—from the oldest Confucian texts to collections published in the 18th century. The diversity of Chinese demonology is astounding. Some demons are incorporeal, others are robust, there are giants and tiny ones, clever and foolish, beautiful and ugly. They can transform into anyone and anything, beg, bear children, unite into military units, and so on. Moreover, animals, plants, and objects can possess demonic essence. According to Chinese folk beliefs, demons are present everywhere and actively participate in people's lives. Not all of them are dangerous, and some are even comical, but their main function is to punish people for evil deeds. They know no sentimentality, and it's best not to read about the deeds of the most terrifying of them before bed.

Jan Jacob de Groot was a Dutch historian of religion, head of the Department of Sinology at Leiden University, and lived in China for a long time.
