The story of a brave German nurse who sacrificed everything for her family and fought fiercely for the children who became prisoners of Auschwitz. Helen Hannemann, her husband Johann and their five children move to Berlin in search of a better life. In a big city you can disappear, and this is the best way to survive in the new Germany - to become invisible. But Helen's worst fears come true when her husband, a virtuoso violinist, is first fired from the Berlin Conservatory, and then, by order of the SS, arrested along with their children. Because they all have Gypsy roots. Although Helen is German and is not subject to this arrest, she refuses to abandon her family. In the camp, she has to make an even more fateful choice: to surrender and submit to the will of fate or to fight and save, at the cost of her own life, the little prisoners of Auschwitz (Oświęcim). The book has two endings: fictional and real, each reader decides for himself how the story of Helen and her family will end.
