Folk demonology and mythological-ritual traditions of the Slavs
29.99 €
This book analyzes Slavic folk beliefs about supernatural beings and examines the connections between demonological concepts and the general folklore and mythological-ritual tradition. The author seeks to demonstrate that so-called lower mythology constitutes the most important substantive core of all traditional culture, as demonological folk texts preserve the most mythologically significant (and remarkably stable) elements of archaic ethnocultural information. The author focuses on the origins of evil spirits, human relationships with supernatural beings, and the genetic connection between evil spirits and the souls of the dead. The Appendix publishes valuable archival materials, collected during the Polesie expeditions of the 1980s and 1990s, which are being introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time.

To all readers interested in the folk culture, folklore and mythology of the Slavs, as well as philologists, folklorists, ethnologists, cultural scientists and humanities students.
