Kevin Davis, founding editor of Nature Genetics, has dedicated his book to the history of the emergence and development of genome editing technology, aptly named CRISPR. In 2012, biochemist Jennifer Doudna and microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier developed the method, for which they were later awarded the Nobel Prize. Other scientists have refined the procedure, which now allows DNA sequences to be altered quickly and easily. These scientific discoveries led to legal wars over patents that continue to this day.
CRISPR can create disease and pest resistant crop varieties and livestock breeds. People now have the prospect of getting rid of incurable diseases. Scientists are able to change many human traits, such as height and intelligence, from the embryo stage. But all this is fraught with moral and ethical problems, which are assessed and resolved differently in different countries. Unfolding a wide canvas of events, discussions, and legal conflicts related to the penetration of genetic engineering into our lives, the author asks the following questions: "To what extent does man have the right to interfere with the laws of nature? Are there limits to such interference? And if not, should someone set them?"
