Rex Stout, creator of the famous detective series about Niro Wolfe, a great gourmet, passionate lover of orchids and one of the greatest detectives ever described in literature, this time entrusts the investigation of intricate crimes to private detective Tecumseh Fox, Westchester County, New York. The body of Ridley Thorpe, a financier with an untarnished reputation, is found in a secluded woodland cottage. Andy Grant, who visited Thorpe's estate the night before the murder and was the first to discover the corpse, is charged with the crime. Nancy Grant, Andy's sister, turns to Tecumseh Fox to clear her brother of the charge of culpable homicide. Fox takes on the investigation ("Death of a Doublet"). It's very bad for business when someone unknown adds quinine to cans of quality product. Private investigator Amy Duncan takes the case, but she is soon pulled off the investigation. Before that, Amy's car accidentally collides with Fox's car - fortunately, without serious consequences - and the girl shares with the detective her suspicions about who is to blame for the spoilage of products. The culprit Amy considers the owners of the firm that competes with the company of her uncle, Arthur Tingley. The girl goes to visit her uncle and finds him dead in his own office ... ("Bad for Business") It all started with a violin. Tecumseh Fox's friend, a former violinist, persuades the private investigator to participate in a charity event to buy a valuable instrument for a young virtuoso violinist, Jan Tusar. Fox is not a fan of music, but together with a friend he comes to Carnegie Hall to hear Jan perform. The concert goes badly, and it seems that the violin is to blame. When after the concert Fox and his friend rush backstage to comfort Jan, they find the violinist dead - he shot himself in front of witnesses, and the violin was lost in the turmoil ("The Broken Vase").
