Francesco Petrarch (1304–1374) became famous for the centuries for his poems dedicated to his unquenchable love for the beautiful Laura. The author himself collected them in a collection called Canzoniere (Book of Songs). Created over many years, both during the life of Laura (a married lady) and after her death, the poems became a kind of diary, a recording of the feelings that overwhelmed a passionate and vain, intelligent and selfish, quarrelsome and vulnerable – in a word, a complex person. And it is poetry written in the living Italian language, and not learned treatises in Latin, that have preserved for us the name of Petrarch, his voice, his individuality; it is in poetry that all new generations of readers find lines that resonate with themselves.
