Creations. In 2 vols. Volume 1. Dogmatic and polemical works. Exegetical works. Talks
The first volume of the Works of St. Basil the Great contains dogmatic and polemical works, exegetical works, as well as Talks: the famous "Against Eunomius" and "On the Holy Spirit", "Talks on the Six Days" and other works translated into Russian in the 19th century. In addition, this volume includes some of the "Conversations on the Psalms" translated into Russian for the first time, as well as the "Conversations on the Creation of Man," almost unknown to the Russian reader. The Appendix contains a well-known analytical work by Archbishop Basil (Krivoshein) on St. Basil's polemic with Eunomius. The volume concludes with an index of quotations from Holy Scripture. The second volume is devoted to the theological legacy of St. Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea of Cappadocia, and his contemporary and associate St. Amphilochius, Bishop of Iconium. This volume contains moral and ascetical works, including the treatise "On Baptism" and the letters of the saint, published in Russian for the first time. Such a complete collection of St. Basil's letters (368 in all) is published in Russia for the first time: here, in addition to those published before the Revolution (336), are translations of letters addressed to St. Basil by other persons, as well as those considered doubtful and not authentic. In his epistolary legacy the holy father appears not only as an outstanding Orthodox theologian, a fighter against heresies, a wise archpastor, a fine church diplomat, a legislator in the sphere of canon law, a spiritual leader, but also as the most educated man of his time, an outstanding and versatile personality. The appendix contains the most complete in Russian translation collection of the works of St. Amphilochius of Iconium with an introductory article by Hegumen Vassian (Zmeev), as well as a number of scientific and theological works on the legacy of St. Basil the Great: S.M. Zarin, Archbishop Basil (Krivoshein), T. Nalimov and P. Smirnov. The edition is prefaced by a foreword by Metropolitan Vladimir of Tashkent and Central Asia. The texts of St. Basil's works are accompanied by theological, church-historical and textual commentaries. At the end of the book there is an index of quotations from Holy Scripture, as well as an alphabetical index to both volumes of the Works of St. Basil.
