5th century BC. Syracuse. The Peloponnesian War is raging, and hundreds of Athenians are captured after a failed attack on Syracuse. Held captive in a quarry, they perish from hunger, thirst, and disease. Two Syracusans, unemployed potters Gelon and Lampon, decide to stage a performance of Euripides's "Medea" with the help of the captured Athenians. But the actors, promised food and drink, are only accepted if they can recite a few lines from the great tragedy from memory. They need to find money for food, costumes, and sets. And they also need to persuade the Sicilians, who hate the Athenians, to come to the performance.
