The touching story of a slave girl who had to endure numerous trials before finding long-awaited freedom and happiness with her beloved is well-known throughout the world.

Brazilian writer Bernardo Guimarães's 1875 novel, imbued with a pathos of defending human dignity, struck readers at the time with its poignancy and relevance: slavery in Brazil was only abolished thirteen years after its publication. Influenced by the book and the passionate sympathy for its protagonist, many Brazilian families gave their girls the name Isaura.

A hundred years later, Bernardo Guimarães' novel became the basis for a television series (1976), which was shown to great acclaim in various countries. Since then, "Isaura the Slave" has become a cult classic: readers are drawn not only to its authentic depiction of life and customs in provincial Brazil in the mid-19th century but also to its happy ending—the triumph of a pure and noble soul.
