Over six decades of creative work, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, one of the founders of Impressionism, created approximately six thousand works—a hundred a year. His paintings are unmistakably recognizable by the sense of happiness and harmony they exude. The writer Octave Mirbeau called Renoir the only great artist who never painted a single sad picture. His canvases reflected the joy he himself felt while creating them. He was not drawn to heroic or tragic subjects; he loved people, light, and nature, painting dancing and merry townspeople and villagers, beautiful landscapes and flowers, charming children, and young, vibrant women. Renoir's compatriot, art historian Pascal Bonafou, recounts his difficult relationships with colleagues, art dealers, and officials, his painting techniques and color preferences, and reveals how the artist managed, in his old age, with little use of his hands and confined to a wheelchair, to paint en plein air and create sculptures.
